acclaimed Australian baroque ensemble, Salut!. Formed in 1995 with recorder
player, Sally Melhuish, Salut! is presenting its 6th subscription series
to enthusiastic audiences in Sydney, Canberra and NSW regional centres.
At the May 2000 Canberra International Chamber Music Festival, Salut!'s
performance with Dutch baroque cellist, Jaap ter Linden, was voted "Highlight
of the Festival" by the critics. In March 2000, Salut!'s CD, Italian
Instrumental & Vocal Music won "Early Music Record of the Month"
in the UK Classic FM Magazine.
Tim was awarded
the post-graduate baroque Certificaat from The Royal Conservatorium,
The Hague, in 1991 after studying baroque cello with Jaap ter Linden.
Whilst in the Netherlands, he worked with early music exponents including
William Christie, Sigiswald and Barthold Kuijken, Wilbert Hazelzet and
Lucy van Dael. In 1997, Tim returned to Europe to perform in Amsterdam,
as well as to undertake further study in baroque cello and basse de
violon with Jaap ter Linden. The same year at the Spa Summer Festival
in Belgium, he appeared with Simon Standage, Bruce Haynes and Jaap ter
Linden in performances of JC Bach's chamber music. Tim is currently
the sole exponent of the basse de violon in Australia, exploring the
music for unspecified bass instruments by 17th century Spanish, Italian,
English, French and German composers.
Tim is also a 1983
graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and began is exploration
of early cello repertoire and techniques soon after commencing his undergraduate
degree there in 1980. Through the encouragement of the Sydney Conservatorium
traverso and recorder teacher, Howard Oberg, Tim quickly became familiar
with the discipline of basso continuo playing through his accompaniment
of the great baroque flute and recorder repertoire of JS Bach, Telemann,
Quantz and others. As a result of a twenty-year period of practical
experience as a bass-line player, Tim has built up a vast amount of
knowledge and insight in the art of shaping and giving impetus to a
baroque bass-line. He has recorded for Walsingham Classics, ABC Classic
FM, 2MBS-FM and ArtSound-FM. Tim has given early cello technique workshops
for the Australian Strings Association that include expositions on the
underhand bowgrip for the cello bow.
